GOSHEN, N.Y. (AP) - A 27-year-old New York woman will spend at least five years behind bars for the drugged-driving crash that resulted in the death of her 2-year-old son.

Nicole Smith was sentenced Monday in Orange County Court to five to 15 years in prison for the March 19 crash along Route 17K in Montgomery that claimed the life of her son Jacob.

The Bloomingburg woman admitted she was under the influence of methadone and Xanax when she crossed the yellow line to pass a motorist and collided with another vehicle.

Smith’s car veered off the road, striking an embankment and a tree. The baby’s car seat wasn’t properly secured and he was ejected from the vehicle.

Smith was arrested three months after the crash on heroin possession charges.
