HELENA, Mont. (AP) - An East Helena police officer accused of punching a 70-year-old man after a car crash has been convicted of misdemeanor assault.

The Independent Record reports (https://goo.gl/ZBwuia ) 27-year-old Robert Gutowski was found guilty Monday. He was given a one-year deferred sentence and fined $340.

Gutowski was off-duty when he was involved in a four-vehicle crash in Helena on Sept 6. The driver of the car that hit Gutowski’s said Gutowski beat him on the arm four times.

Gutowski’s mother, who was recovering from brain surgery, was in the car with him. She testified her head hit the dash.

Gutowski said he was distraught and concerned for his mother when he confronted the other driver.

Gutowski was put on unpaid leave for a week before being reinstated by East Helena Mayor James Schell.
