NEWBURY, Vt. (AP) - Police investigating a report that an 80-year-old man had shot his wife found a Newbury couple dead in an apparent murder-suicide.

State Police went to check on Kenneth and Barbara Welch late Monday. A relative of the residents called police, saying Welch had called indicating he had shot his 76-year-old wife.

Troopers found a man and woman dead in the house of apparent gunshot wounds.

“The troopers arrived and didn’t get any type of response and had to force entry into the house, and they did discover a male and female subject deceased,” Police Capt. J.P. Sinclair told WCAX-TV (https://bit.ly/2h4o0m3).

Neighbor Melissa Gilmore described the couple as kind and friendly. “They are great to my kids,” she told the TV station. “They walk up every week with a little bag of chips and soda for them, and my kids were over there sliding yesterday. I saw them yesterday!”

Police said their investigation had not revealed anyone else who might be involved in the deaths.
