RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) - The trailing candidate in the race for North Carolina state auditor has asked for a statewide recount.

Republican Chuck Stuber gave his formal recount request Tuesday to the State Board of Elections. Democratic incumbent Beth Wood leads Stuber by almost 6,000 votes from 4.5 million cast after all counties completed their tabulations. A mandatory recount is granted when the statewide margin is 10,000 votes or less.

State elections director Kim Strach told county election leaders her goal is for them to complete the machine recount by Thursday afternoon.

The State Board of Elections wants to certify this fall’s results by the end of the week.

Recounts also have been called for in at least two state House races. In Wake County, GOP Rep. Marilyn Avila trails Democrat Joe John. And in Wilson and Pitt counties, Charlie Pat Farris is behind Republican Rep. Susan Martin.
