WELCH, W.Va. (AP) - Budget problems are forcing the McDowell County Sheriff’s Office to lay off six deputies at the end of the year.

In a news release, McDowell County Sheriff Martin West urged residents to come to a 4 p.m. Dec. 14 county commission meeting in downtown Welch to voice their opinions about the layoffs, which go into effect Dec. 31. Two other deputies were laid off in July.

West says the six deputies had between two and 10 years of job experience.

West says his office had already foregone a midnight shift and will now be left without an evening shift. The day shift will only operate Monday through Friday.
