PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - The Rhode Island Commerce Corporation has awarded more than $450,000 to 11 companies pursuing innovative projects.

The Providence Journal reports ( ) the voucher program allows small companies to win up to $50,000 in grants to get research and development assistance from universities or research centers.

The agency’s innovation director says 34 companies applied to the economic incentive program, seeking $1.45 million.

Officials say state leaders allocated $500,000 in the budget for the program.

Biotechnology advances for transplant recipients and renewable wind-energy technology were among the projects that won grants.
