GROVELAND, Fla. (AP) - A 73-year-old man is dead even though passers-by rescued him from his vehicle which went into a pond after hitting a utility pole.

Florida Highway Patrol spokeswoman Kim Montes says the man’s rescuers got him to the shore Wednesday night near Groveland in central Florida.

She says he was sitting on the ground talking to the people who rescued him when he suddenly lost consciousness and died.

It wasn’t known why the man drove off the road. Troopers haven’t released his name.

An investigation continues.
