CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas (AP) - A convicted sex offender from North Carolina living in Texas must serve 27 years in prison after being nabbed in an online police sting offering sex with girls.

James Robert Kirkland of Corpus Christi was sentenced Wednesday. Federal prosecutors say the 48-year-old Kirkland was arrested last September at a Corpus Christi mall and later convicted of online solicitation of a minor.

Investigators say Kirkland in 1998 was convicted in North Carolina for indecent liberties with a child. Kirkland in 2001 was convicted of bank robbery.

Kirkland was on supervised release for a 2010 failure to register as a sex offender conviction. Kirkland was sentenced Wednesday to two years on that count, plus 25 years for the 2015 Texas case.

Further details weren’t immediately available on the North Carolina cases.
