CRYSTAL CITY, Texas (AP) - A petition has been certified calling for the recall of the mayor and two council members in a South Texas town now facing federal criminal charges.

Crystal City council member Joel Barajas (bah-RAH’-has) said the petition was certified Thursday by the city clerk as ordered by a judge. Barajas is the only Crystal City council member who isn’t facing criminal charges.

The recall effort launched last fall targets Crystal City Mayor Ricardo Lopez, Mayor Pro-Tem Rogelio Mata and council member Marco Rodriguez.

Lopez, Mata and council member Roel Mata were indicted last week in a bribery and conspiracy investigation. Rodriguez was arrested last month on human smuggling charges.

Lopez, Rogelio Mata and Rodriguez have five days to resign or face a recall election. Roel Mata has resigned from the council.
