NEWARK, N.J. (AP) - The family of a 14-year-old who says his shoulder was broken during an encounter with police in Newark has filed a notice of their intent to sue the police department.

Jamod Watkins says that he was thrown to the ground by officers who stopped him near his home on Feb. 2. Attorney Rosemarie Arnold says that the shoulder needs to be surgically repaired and the family intends to sue the city.

Acting Newark Public Safety Director Anthony Ambrose said last week that Det. Wilberto Ruiz was suspended because he failed to submit a report documenting the incident until 24 hours after it occurred.

He added that other officers involved in the incident have been reassigned.

He says that the police department can’t comment further because an investigation is underway.

This story has been corrected to show that Ambrose said last week that Ruiz had been suspended.
