LOS ANGELES (AP) - Four days after withdrawing from California’s U.S. Senate race, state Assemblyman Rocky Chavez has endorsed another Republican for the job.

Chavez on Friday said he supports Silicon Valley lawyer Duf Sundheim - a moderate and former chairman of the state GOP.

Another former GOP chairman, conservative Tom Del Beccaro, is also running.

Chavez says he backs Sundheim because California needs - in his words - “someone who understands the diverse nature of our state and can represent all Californians.”

Chavez abruptly ended his candidacy on Monday, with his campaign nearly $43,000 in debt.

Democrats are favored to hold the seat occupied by retiring Democrat Barbara Boxer.

State Attorney General Kamala Harris and Rep. Loretta Sanchez of Orange County are leading Democrats in the June 7 primary contest.
