CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) - A former University of North Carolina Board of Governors chairman has been arrested after authorities say they found a small handgun in his briefcase as he passed through a security checkpoint at Charlotte Douglas International Airport.

Jail records show Charlotte-Mecklenburg police officers arrested Charlotte lawyer John Fennebresque on Thursday morning and charged him with misdemeanor possession of a firearm on city property.

Fennebresque told news outlets that he didn’t know the gun was in the briefcase.

Fennebresque says he had put four guns in the briefcase before he took his wife and adult children to a class at a firing range on Sunday so they could receive their concealed-carry permits. He says he thought he emptied the briefcase of all four guns when he returned home. He was released on $500 bail.
