SANTA FE, N.M. (AP) - Authorities have released the name of a Santa Fe police officer involved in the fatal shooting of an armed robbery suspect at a motel last month.

New Mexico State Police on Friday identified the officer as Detective John Vanetten, a 13 ½-year law enforcement veteran.

They say the Jan. 27 shooting remains under investigation and the case will eventually be referred to the First Judicial District Attorney’s Office for review.

State police previously said several thousand dollars of cash was stolen during a holdup of a Wal-Mart store near the motel and video confirmed the robber carried a handgun.

A motel guest who witnessed the shootout between police and the suspect said the man fired first and police returned fire. Police later identified the suspect as 31-year-old Herman Flores.
