PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - The largest charitable foundation in Rhode Island says it awarded a record-high $41.5 million in grants last year to more than 1,600 nonprofit organizations.

The Rhode Island Foundation also announced Friday that it received $43 million in new gifts in 2015, the fourth-highest amount in its 99-year history.

Foundation President and CEO Neil Steinberg said “extraordinary generosity made it possible for us to make investments in Rhode Island as never before.”

Many of the grants were made under the foundation’s competitive Strategy Grant Program, which targets seven key sectors: arts and culture, children and families, education, economic security, environment, health and housing.

The foundation was founded in 1916 with $10,000 from Jesse Metcalf. Its assets have since grown to $790 million.
