SYRACUSE, N.Y. (AP) - Police in Syracuse say an officer fatally shot an armed woman after she refused to put down a sawed-off shotgun.

It happened shortly after 8:30 p.m. Friday at an apartment building on Butternut Street.

Syracuse Police Chief Frank Fowler tells The Post-Standard of Syracuse that police were responding to complaints from neighbors about possible drug sales at the apartment building.

Police say an officer spotted a woman carrying a sawed-off shotgun and she ran. Police say another officer told her several times to drop the weapon but she refused and the officer shot her.

The 32-year-old woman, whose name wasn’t immediately released, was taken to a hospital, where she died.

Police are continuing to investigate. They did not immediately release the name of the officer.
