KAILUA-KONA, Hawaii (AP) - The Hawaii Police Department is investigating brush fires that temporarily closed two major highways as arson.

West Hawaii Today reports (https://bit.ly/1KjmDKc ) firefighters responded to multiple suspicious fires Thursday in North Kona and South Kohala. The fires burned over 1,000 acres.

Highway 190 and an intersection on Daniel K. Inouye Highway were closed Thursday and reopened Friday afternoon as firefighters continued to fight the fires.

Two Hawaii County helicopters were assisting firefighters by dropping buckets of water in the area.

Hawaii Fire Department Battalion Chief Gantry Andrade said no injuries were reported and no homes were threatened.



Gantry had said initial reports indicated the fires were started in five different locations.
