SYRACUSE, N.Y. (AP) - Syracuse police have released the name of the officer who fatally shot a woman who they say refused to put down a sawed-off shotgun.

Detective George Hack said Monday that Officer Darrin Ettinger shot 32-year-old Sahlah Ridgeway on Friday night at the Butternut Street apartment building where she lived.

Hack says Ettinger and Officer Jeremy Decker were responding to complaints from neighbors about possible drug sales at the building.

He says Decker was at the rear of the building when he spotted Ridgeway carrying a sawed-off shotgun, and she ran. Police say Ettinger encountered her and told her several times to drop the weapon, but she refused and he shot her.

The officers were not injured. Hack says both officers are 10-year Syracuse police veterans.

Police are continuing to investigate.
