SALT LAKE CITY (AP) - A Utah lawmaker has proposed a new statue for the state Capitol that would honor two Catholic priests.

KSL-TV reports (https://bit.ly/1VgVR5U ) that Murray Democrat Rep. Mark Wheatley says Francisco Atanasio Dominguez and Silvestre Velez de Escalante are a vital piece of Utah history.

Catholic Diocese of Salt Lake City archivist Gary Topping says the priests are known for their 1776 expedition to find a route from New Mexico to Monterey, California. He says they planned to convert indigenous people to Christianity.

Wheatley said in a statement that the priests didn’t make it to Monterey, but did discover, explore and archive information that allowed others to follow them.
