BESSEMER, Ala. (AP) - Authorities have identified a man killed in a head-on collision, which police say occurred last weekend as he was driving the wrong way on Interstate 459 in Bessemer.

Local media outlets report that the Jefferson County Coroner’s Office has identified the man as 34-year-old Johnny Alexis Barco.

Bessemer Police Sgt. Cortice Miles says police received reports early Saturday of a gray SUV traveling northbound in the southbound lanes of the interstate. When officers arrived, a crash had already occurred involving the wrong way-SUV and a second SUV near exit 6. Authorities said Barco was pronounced dead on the scene.

The driver of the second SUV and a passenger in Barco’s SUV were taken to the hospital.

Miles says the crash remains under investigation by Bessemer’s Traffic Homicide Unit.
