MENA, Ark. (AP) - Arkansas State Police are investigating the shooting death of a man by a Mena police officer in southwest Arkansas.

State police say the officer approached 30-year-old Shawn Henry Allen Dickens about noon Tuesday outside a Mena convenience store and the two began to fight before Dickens tried to flee and dropped a gun.

Police say Dickens stopped and turned to pick up the gun, then was shot when he ignored orders to move away from the weapon. He was taken to a hospital where he died and the body will be sent to the state Crime Laboratory for an autopsy.

The name of the officer was not immediately released.

Police did not say why the officer initially approached Dickens.
