JACKSON, Miss. (AP) - Both of Mississippi’s Republican U.S. senators say the next president should fill the current vacancy on the Supreme Court.

Justice Antonin Scalia died Saturday at a ranch in Texas, and President Barack Obama has said he will nominate a successor.

Mississippi Sens. Thad Cochran and Roger Wicker issued statements Tuesday saying they oppose a nomination being made during a presidential election year.

Cochran says there is “significant precedent for holding a Supreme Court vacancy open through the end of a president’s term.”

Wicker says the issue is “too important and too consequential to let this current president make the decision.”
