CHAPEL HILL, N.C. (AP) - Prosecutors say all charges have been dropped against the first man arrested in the shooting of a 1-year-old Chapel Hill girl.
Local media outlets report that 22-year-old Shaquille Oneill Davis had been charged with first-degree murder and assault with a deadly weapon in the Christmas Day shooting of Maleah Williams. Authorities say the girl had been playing outside when she was struck by shots coming from a passing vehicle. She died three days later.
Prosecutors say conflicting evidence led to the charges being dismissed. The reports say Davis will remain incarcerated for 90 days while investigators continue to gather evidence.
Two other people, Ramone Jamarr Alston and Pierre Je Bron Moore, have been charged with first-degree murder in the case.
