BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) - Birmingham police say investigators believe a man was fatally shot because he had received phone calls from his ex-girlfriend.

Department spokesman Sean Edwards says 27-year-old Charles Burchfield was found dead next to an apartment complex on Warrior Road Tuesday morning after an argument with his girlfriend.

Edwards says Burchfield and the suspect, whose identity hasn’t been released, argued about him receiving calls from his ex-girlfriend.

Edwards says witnesses told police the suspect shot at Burchfield twice before the man threw bricks at the suspect’s vehicle. Edwards says the suspect shot at Burchfield again and wounded him.

Police say the shooting remains under investigation and the suspect was taken into custody.
