PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - A Providence man has been indicted in the slaying of a pregnant woman who was found in a burning house.

Rhode Island Attorney General Peter Kilmartin says 29-year-old Born Smith was indicted on charges of murder and first-degree arson.

Firefighters found 32-year-old Aliss Collins inside a third-floor apartment of a burning house Nov. 13.

Collins was taken to Rhode Island Hospital, where she was pronounced dead. The unborn baby did not survive.

The medical examiner determined that Collins had been beaten and the cause of death was described as blunt force trauma and smoke inhalation.

Police say Smith and Collins had been “intimate partners” for 10 months.

Smith is scheduled to be arraigned March 9 in Providence Superior Court.

It’s unclear whether Smith has an attorney who could comment.
