AKRON, Ohio (AP) - Police say a patient in the psych ward of an Ohio hospital attacked a security guard with knives, critically injuring him.

Akron police Lt. Rick Edwards says the 54-year-old guard had surgery Tuesday night. His injuries were considered life-threatening.

Edwards says the attack happened at around 7 p.m. Tuesday at Summa St. Thomas Hospital. The guard was stabbed in the neck and abdomen as the 33-year-old patient was being taken to St. Thomas.

Other hospital employees restrained the patient, who was taken into custody. No one else was hurt.

Edwards says it isn’t known how the patient got the knives into the hospital. A Summa Health spokesman says the attack was unprovoked.

Charges are expected.

The U.S. Department of Labor’s Occupational Safety and Health Administration said Wednesday it’s also investigating.
