METAIRIE, La. (AP) - A reserve officer with the New Orleans Police Department has been arrested on suspicion of drunk driving in an accident that injured a Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office detective.

Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office spokesman Col. John Fortunato tells media outlets that 72-year-old Sgt. Woodrow Stewart was booked Monday on charges including driving while intoxicated, reckless operation of a vehicle, vehicular negligent injuring and driving without a seat belt.

The crash occurred Monday night in Metairie. Fortunato says Detective Steven Quaintance was driving his unmarked sheriff’s office vehicle westbound when Stewart turned into the officer’s path and collided with his vehicle. Quaintance was taken to a hospital with a broken leg.

Fortunato says NOPD’s Internal Affairs division has placed Stewart on emergency suspension and has taken possession of his badge.

It’s unclear if Stewart has an attorney.
