EUGENE, Ore. (AP) - University of Oregon officials are considering forcing a privately owned cellphone tower to be removed from Hayward Field in preparation for hosting the 2021 world track and field championships.

The Register-Guard reports (https://is.gd/SuVAPl ) that UO has slated the 120-foot tall tower for demolition in August before construction of a new and much larger grandstand for the 2021 event.

The University of Oregon Board of Trustees has been trying to negotiate with tower owner SBA Communications for four months, but has not reached a deal. The board is considering using its power of condemnation to remove the tower.

SBA leases the land the tower sits on from the university. Its lease runs through 2029.
