YONKERS, N.Y. (AP) - A fire official says an apartment fire in Westchester County has left nine people with minor injuries, including eight firefighters.

Assistant Fire Chief Brian Travers tells WNBC-TV (https://bit.ly/1opi2wz ) that 30 to 45 firefighters battled the blaze early Wednesday in Yonkers.

Smoke filled the building’s stairwells and flames shot out of the windows. Residents were forced to evacuate using fire escapes.

Firefighters needed about 40 minutes to control the fire due to wind and the age of the building.

Officials say two families have been displaced.

The cause of the fire is under investigation. Smoking is being considered as a potential factor.
