RIDGECREST, Calif. (AP) - The California Highway Patrol says two people including a child were killed and seven others were injured in a single-vehicle rollover crash on a desert highway in Kern County.

The CHP says it appears tire tread separated, causing the SUV to overturn while at speed Wednesday on southbound U.S. 395 south of Ridgecrest.

The SUV crossed into the northbound lane, spun and overturned, landing on the dirt shoulder.

The Los Angeles Times reports (https://lat.ms/1oMo0Y5) two passengers - a 29-year-old man and a child - were killed. The driver, a 32-year-old woman, and six additional children were hospitalized with minor to major injuries.

The CHP says everyone in the SUV was wearing a seatbelt.

Drugs and alcohol are not suspected to be a factor.
