RIVERHEAD, N.Y. (AP) - Two suburban New York correction officers have been arrested in an alleged assault on a jail inmate.

Suffolk County District Attorney Thomas Spota says the officers were arraigned Thursday.

Vincent Cennamo III pleaded not guilty to third-degree assault, official misconduct and other charges.

Mark Nicol pleaded not guilty to third-degree assault.

Their attorneys said their clients look forward to clearing their names. Both were released without bail.

The charges stem from a November 2013 incident involving an alleged assault on an inmate who had violated probation for a drug conviction. Cennamo allegedly claimed the inmate slipped and cut his eyebrow after hitting a stove.

Nicol has been an officer for seven years and Cennamo for five years.

The Suffolk County Sheriff’s Department says both men have been suspended without pay.
