ERIE, Pa. (AP) - The Roman Catholic Diocese of Erie is closing three grade schools and one high school, but will retain a PreK-8 format at the grade schools which remain open.

The diocese had considered assigning students in prekindergarten through fifth grade to some buildings, and turning others into middle schools for grades six through eight.

Instead, all of the grade schools that will remain open, Blessed Sacrament, Our Lady of Peace, Our Lady’s Christian, St. George, St. James and St. Luke will remain open as PreK-8 schools starting in September 2017.

Venango Catholic in Oil City is closing because of low enrollment, but the other three high schools - Mercyhurst Prep, Cathedral Prep, and Villa Maria Academy - will stay open under the reorganization.

St. Boniface, St. Peter Cathedral and Our Lady of Mount Carmel grade schools are closing.
