MILWAUKEE (AP) - The largest Mexican grocery store chain in the Milwaukee area is closed as employees head to Madison for a rally against legislation they consider anti-immigrant.

El Rey is closing its factory, warehouse and four grocery stores so its 400 workers can go to the state Capitol Thursday.

El Rey owner Ernesto Villarreal tells WISN-TV (https://bit.ly/1QLlbNr ) the move is an act of solidarity. In 38 years, Villarreal says he has never closed the stores, not even for holidays.

Opponents say an Assembly bill would lead police to investigate a person’s immigration status and detain undocumented people for deportation. They say a proposed Senate bill would block counties from issuing local identification cards to people who don’t have access to a state ID.
