NEW PALTZ, N.Y. (AP) - A 60-year-old Hudson Valley man shot by a New Paltz police officer during a standoff in October has died.

Police confirmed the death of John Tozzi on Wednesday. No other details were available.

An Ulster County Grand Jury was supposed to hear both the case against Tozzi and the police officer who shot him. District Attorney Holley Carnright tells the Times-Herald Record of Middletown (bit.ly/1QJMRlZ) it’s unclear how Tozzi’s death will affect those investigations.

Authorities have not identified the New Paltz police officer.

Tozzi had not been charged with any crimes. Police said when officers arrived at Tozzi’s residence to interview him, he shot at them from his apartment door and police shot back.

According to his family, Tozzi was despondent over the loss of his parents and 22-year-old son.
