CHICAGO (AP) - The MacArthur Foundation is focusing this year on its hometown by distributing $6.5 million to more than a dozen Chicago arts groups.

The foundation on Thursday announced 14 recipients of this year’s MacArthur Awards for Creative and Effective Institutions.

In the past, the award has gone to organizations worldwide. But this year, the Chicago-based foundation only gave to Chicago theater, film, music, opera, arts and dance groups as a “commitment to its hometown.”

The largest of this year’s grants, $1 million, goes to Lookingglass Theatre on Chicago’s Michigan Avenue. The Chicago Opera Theater will receive $800,000. Other recipients include the Chicago Film Archives and Chicago Jazz Philharmonic.

Grants range from $200,000 to $1 million based on the size of the group’s budget. The awards have been given out since 2006.
