HOUSTON (AP) - A man has been arrested after Houston police say he fatally shot his mother’s alleged attacker.

Police say the incident happened early Wednesday after 40-year-old Frederick Wallace assaulted his common-law wife in a car at a gas station parking lot, while three young children were inside the vehicle.

Houston Police Department Sgt. Matthew Brady said that a group of people arrived in an SUV to get her and the children. The woman and the children got out of the vehicle and Wallace tried to drive away.

Authorities say that the woman’s son, 18-year-old Treveon Jones, fired multiple shots at Wallace’s vehicle. Wallace was pronounced dead at the scene.

Jones has been charged with murder in the case. Online court records do not list an attorney for Jones.

The investigation is ongoing.
