HILLSBORO, Ore. (AP) - A Washington County man accused of fatally stabbing his former girlfriend while on temporary release from a halfway house has been sentenced to life in prison.

The Oregonian reports (https://is.gd/m0jCh3 ) that 25-year-old Eric Petersen pleaded guilty to aggravated murder on Wednesday and was sentenced to life for the August 2014 death of 24-year-old Aimie Zdrantan.

At the time of the killing, he was serving 60 days in a minimum-security transitional facility in Hillsboro and had a day pass to go to a job search service.

Senior Deputy District Attorney Bracken McKey told the court the Washington County Community Corrections Center was in part responsible for the killing because it failed to keep track of Petersen during his time at the facility.
