INDIANAPOLIS (AP) - A jury has convicted a man of murder in connection with the fatal shooting of a woman found outside of a government building in Indianapolis.

William Sharron Smith of Indianapolis was convicted Thursday in the death of 20-year-old Azya Knowles. She was discovered by police early on Feb. 11, 2015, inside a bullet-riddled truck near the front doors of the City-County Building. She died two days later at a hospital.

The 33-year-old Smith told police had someone fired shots at him and Knowles as they sat in the truck and he drove to building to get help. However, court documents showed Smith’s story was inconsistent with physical evidence and investigators believed Smith shot Knowles and then drove to the City-County Building.

Smith is due to be sentenced on March 4.
