HOUSTON (AP) - Martha Montalvo has been named interim chief of the Houston Police Department, where she has risen through the ranks from joining the force as a beat officer 35 years ago.

Mayor Sylvester Turner chose Montalvo on Thursday to fill in for Charles McClelland until a permanent successor can be found. McClelland is retiring effective Feb. 26.

Montalvo is the first Hispanic chief of the HPD and the second woman to fill the post.
