MADISON, Wis. (AP) - Rep. John Nygren says he won’t run for Congress.

Nygren, a Marinette Republican who serves as co-chairman of the Legislature’s powerful Joint Finance Committee, had been considering running for the 8th Congressional District seat after incumbent Reid Ribble announced he wouldn’t seek re-election.

Nygren released a statement Thursday saying he wants to spend time with his family and believes his place is in Marinette and Madison.

State Sen. Frank Lasee, a De Pere Republican, is running for the seat. Democrats Penny Bernard Schaber, a former state representative, and Tom Nelson, the Outagamie County executive, are considering running.
