LOS ANGELES (AP) - State and local officials plan to announce the latest information on the lengthy leak of natural gas from a Southern California Gas Co. storage well near Los Angeles’ Porter Ranch neighborhood.

The utility stopped the leak last week, but thousands of families who relocated to temporary housing to get away from the noxious smell are awaiting word from authorities on whether the well is deemed permanently sealed.

The director of the state Office of Emergency Services will hold a briefing at 10 a.m. Thursday.

U.S. Rep. Brad Sherman’s deputy chief of staff, Ben Fishel, says in an email to The Associated Press that authorities will release results of testing of the well capping and there’s “every reason to believe this announcement will be certifying that well is sealed.”
