SUFFOLK, Va. (AP) - Police say a 3-year-old boy accidentally shot himself in the shoulder at a home in Suffolk.

Officials said in a news release that the shooting happened at a home on Jonathans Way on Wednesday evening.

Police say the boy found a handgun kept in the home for protection and accidentally shot himself in the shoulder. He was flown to a hospital with injuries that do not appear to be life-threatening and remains hospitalized Thursday.

Police say the mother and another child, a 2-year-old, were home at the time of the shooting. Police say the investigation is ongoing and charges are pending.

Police urge people who have children in their homes to keep guns locked and unloaded with ammunition locked in a separate location.
