CAZENOVIA, N.Y. (AP) - Police say an upstate New York man has been arrested on felony animal cruelty charges and is accused of killing his mother’s cat.

New York State Police say Michael Vreeland was arrested Wednesday on a charge of aggravated cruelty to animals.

Authorities say the 22-year-old shot his mother’s kitten with a .22 caliber rifle behind their home in Cazenovia (kaz-uh-NOH’-vee-yah) on Tuesday.

Vreeland was being held Thursday night in lieu of $500 bail. It was not immediately clear whether he had an attorney who could comment on the allegations.
