SANTA ANA, Calif. (AP) - A woman arrested on suspicion of helping three fugitives told police she nervously drove the men around as they tried to buy a used car in the hours after their escape from a California jail, according to court documents.

Ly Hoa Le said she was unaware of the escape at Orange County Central Men’s Jail when she got a call Jan. 22 from her friend Bac Duong asking for a lift, The Orange County Register (https://bit.ly/24c8NQo ) reported Thursday, citing a search warrant.

Le has not been charged with a crime, and she is free amid an investigation, prosecutors said.

Duong has known Le for 10 years and calls her “mom,” the document said. He turned himself in Jan. 29 after spending a week as a fugitive. Hossein Nayeri and Jonathan Tieu were captured in San Francisco the following day.

After the jailbreak, sheriff’s investigators learned that all three men were driven to a sandwich shop by an older woman in a green Lexus.

Authorities reviewed the restaurant’s surveillance video and observed a dark-colored sedan with an unknown female driver and three passengers who resembled the fugitives.

Investigators determined that Le was the driver of the dark sedan, the warrant says. After her arrest on Jan. 29, Le described how she was surprised when two men got in the car with Duong and told her they had just broken out of jail.

“Le said she wasn’t paying attention to where she was going because she was scared and nervous that they would kill her,” according to the warrant.

She declined their requests to buy them a car and they eventually let her go, the warrant said.

Le said she hadn’t heard from Duong for several months prior to the call.
