SANFORD, Fla. (AP) - Sanford International Airport officials have announced a $43 million expansion project.

The Orlando Sentinel (https://bit.ly/21abtvm ) reports the project would add new gates, baggage carousels and security lanes to the airport over the next four years.

The expansion is a response to the growing number of travelers who use the airport. In 2015, the airport handled nearly 2.5 million passengers - a 14 percent increase from 2014.

The airport’s annual passenger count is expected to grow by another 200,000 over the next two years. It’s also expected to serve 3 million travelers by 2030.

Airport president and chief executive officer Diane Crews says the expansion project is needed to handle the expected growth.

The design plans still need approval by the Federal Aviation Administration.
