PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) - Authorities say a body slipped out of a submerged vehicle as they were pulling it out of the Columbia River.

Portland police say witnesses reported a driver was heading west on Marine Drive Thursday afternoon before the vehicle left the road and crashed into the river.

Police say divers found the Honda Civic Thursday evening and saw one person deceased inside.

Police say investigators and medical examiner requested the body remain in the car during efforts to recover it for evidentiary reasons. The body escaped the car as it was being pulled from the water, police said.

The body had not been located or recovered as of Thursday night.

The crash remains under investigation.
