RIVERHEAD, N.Y. (AP) - A man is heading to prison after admitting to his role in a home invasion burglary that left a Long Island man dead.

Newsday reports (https://nwsdy.li/1oOAVsu ) that Matthew Rooney received a 17-year sentence Thursday in Riverhead. He pleaded guilty in November to manslaughter in the death of Francisco Pirir Canel.

The 24-year-old East Moriches man gave a tearful apology to the judge and Canel’s family for the December 2013 slaying, saying he wishes he had died instead.

Prosecutors have said there were seven men home when Rooney and his partner Paul Batterson Jr. shot out the windows and shot a door off its hinges.

Prosecutors said Batterson fired a shotgun at Canel’s face, killing the 45-year-old Eastport man. Batterson is expected to receive a 35-year sentence next week.
