TOMS RIVER, N.J. (AP) - A New Jersey man has been convicted of killing his elderly neighbor with a hammer after a jury rejected his defense that he found the man’s body while robbing his house.

Alan Bienkowski was found guilty Friday in Toms River of killing 76-year-old Anthony Verdicchio in 2013. The 57-year-old Bienkowski faces life in prison without parole when he’s sentenced.

During his trial, Bienkowski had testified that he was high on heroin when he broke into Verdicchio’s house in Manchester and found the man already dead. Bienkowski acknowledged stealing collectibles, including coins.

Part of Bienkowski’s alibi was that he was out running errands and snorting heroin that day.
