ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) - State authorities say a caregiver in western New York has admitted sexually abusing a developmentally disabled woman in his care, pleading guilty to two misdemeanors.

Justice Center Special Prosecutor Patricia Gunning says 58-year-old George R. West of Williamsville has also been fired from his staff position at People Inc. of Amherst.

Gunning says West knew the woman’s disabilities made her legally incapable of consenting to sex.

Sentencing in Erie County Supreme Court is scheduled May 24. Authorities say West will be required to register as a sex offender and surrender his teaching license.

Amherst Police and the Justice Center investigated.
