RICHMOND, Calif. (AP) - A public memorial was held Friday for a beloved Northern California officer shot to death at his home last week in what authorities have called a domestic dispute.

The Contra Costa Times reports (https://bayareane.ws/1oQpUXN) that mourners remembered Richmond Police Sgt. Gus Vegas as a tenacious and versatile officer who made a mark in his hometown of Vallejo, California.

Police say the 58-year-old officer was killed last week by the father of Vegas’ 6-year-old grandson. Robert Vega is in Solano County Jail, charged with murder and kidnapping.

Vegas and his wife were active in Vallejo’s foster care system. He found his calling in police work in his 40s.
