ALBION, Mich. (AP) - A pair of Albion College alumni has gifted $1 million to the private liberal arts school to help financially struggling students and provide an incentive for staff and faculty to live near the campus.

Judy and Michael Harrington’s donation was announced Friday. Michael Harrington is a member of Albion’s board of trustees.

The gift includes forgivable loans for faculty and staff wanting to build or buy homes within walking distance of the campus. The money can be used for down payments or renovations.

The second part of the donation will allow full-time students under financial strain to continue their education at Albion. Students must complete financial literacy counseling and pledge — if able — to help future Albion students in similar situations.

Albion is west of Jackson.
